The communities of Newcastle, Ontario, and New Waterford, Nova Scotia are grieving the loss of Mike “Peewee” Power, a beloved father, coach, and mentor whose passing on December 4, 2025, has left a deep void in the lives of many. Mike, who was 48 years old, spent decades giving back to the world of amateur boxing and is remembered not only for his dedication to the sport, but for the kindness, humour, and warmth he brought into every room he entered.
Born on August 2, 1977, Mike grew up in New Waterford, Nova Scotia, where he first developed the strong work ethic and loyalty that would define him throughout his life. He went on to establish himself as an influential figure in the boxing community, serving as a former Vice President and Secretary at the Motor City Boxing Club. His roots remained tied to Nova Scotia through his continued involvement with the New Waterford Boxing Club, where he was admired as a coach, mentor, and friend.
Mike’s passing followed a stroke he suffered on October 12. For eight weeks, he fought bravely, supported by his family and the many friends who never stopped hoping for his recovery. His cousin, Karen Nancarrow, shared a deeply emotional message confirming his passing, recalling the moment she held his hand along with his mother during his final hours. “He fought to come back to us all,” she wrote, noting his greatest motivation was his love for his children.
Karen’s tribute painted a picture of a man whose impact extended far beyond boxing gyms and training sessions. She described him as an amazing dad, cousin, son, coach, and friend—someone who was not only loved, but deeply trusted. “I was blessed to call him family,” she said. “Thanks Mike for always being on my side as my friend, protector, and confidante.”
The outpouring of love over the past weeks has been overwhelming for the family, who expressed their gratitude to everyone who offered support, whether through messages, meals, gifts, or their presence. The loss has been particularly profound for Mike’s three children, who remain in the thoughts and prayers of all who knew him.
The New Waterford Boxing Club also shared a heartfelt tribute, reflecting on Mike’s influence both inside and outside the ring. “Mike ‘Peewee’ Power has passed away,” the club posted. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his 3 children during this difficult time. Mike was a true gem. A beautiful soul is never forgotten. Your stories and memories will live on forever.”
Mike’s legacy is one built on compassion, commitment, and community. He lifted people up, believed in their potential, and never hesitated to offer support. His influence will continue to be felt in the lives of the athletes he coached, the friends he encouraged, and the family he cherished above all else.
Details regarding his celebration of life will be announced in the coming days.
