Kerry D. Teverbaugh, 76, of Monroe City, Indiana, passed away on December 3, 2025, leaving behind a legacy marked by dedication, curiosity, and a deep love for the people and places that shaped his life. Born on August 9, 1949, in Monroe City to Betty Burton, Kerry was lovingly raised by Nile and Helen Teverbaugh, who instilled in him the values of hard work, compassion, and community involvement that would guide him throughout his life.
Kerry grew up in the familiar streets of Monroe City, attending local schools and forming lifelong friendships. He graduated from South Knox High School in 1968, and from there set his sights on a field that blended precision with passion: metrology. After earning his bachelor’s degree, Kerry followed a path that would eventually place him in front of thousands of television viewers. His career led him to Channel 2 News in Terre Haute, where he served as Chief Meteorologist for many years. He became a familiar and trusted presence in households across the region, his calm and knowledgeable weather reports helping communities navigate everything from sunny days to severe storms.
Beyond the studio lights and weather maps, Kerry was a man who believed strongly in helping others. His free time was rarely spent idle. Instead, he invested himself in humanitarian efforts and community-building projects that brought people together and improved the lives of those around him. In 1999, he played a significant role in establishing the Blue Jean Center in Monroe City, a project that became a cornerstone of support and connection for the town.
Kerry’s commitment to his community extended far beyond a single project. He helped launch the Monroe City Fall Festival, bringing families and neighbors together year after year in celebration. He also lent his talents and time to the Jerry Lewis Telethon, working to raise awareness and support for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Whether planning events, volunteering, or simply lending a hand when needed, Kerry approached every act of service with enthusiasm.
His fascination with astronomy was another defining part of his life. Kerry was known for gazing skyward, captivated by the mysteries of the universe. Friends would often say he “had his head up in the clouds,” a fitting phrase for a man whose professional and personal interests continually led him to study the skies. Whether reading about the latest astronomical discoveries or simply enjoying a clear night with a telescope, Kerry never lost his sense of wonder.
Kerry was preceded in death by his birth mother, Betty Burton; his parents, Nile and Helen Teverbaugh; siblings Larry and Kristi Teverbaugh; and cousin Greg Leech. Their memories remained close to him, shaping the compassionate, thoughtful man he became.
He is survived by his son, Alejandro Martinez Ramirez; his sister, Diana Westfall; and cousins Jerry (Georgianna) Coonrod, Rick Leech, and Cindy Leech. To them, and to the many friends and community members who knew him, Kerry leaves behind a lifetime of kindness, humility, and dedication.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, December 7, 2025, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Monroe City Blue Jean Center—one of the very places Kerry helped bring into existence. His influence continues to echo through those he mentored, including Jesse Walker of WTWO, who shared heartfelt words upon learning of his passing: “It’s with great sadness that I pass along information about the passing of Kerry Dean. Kerry was the Chief Meteorologist here at WTWO from 1979–1990. He was the meteorologist that I got my start working under… Because of Kerry, I’ve been able to do what I love for all these years.”
Kerry Teverbaugh will be deeply missed, remembered always for the warmth of his spirit and the countless ways he gave back to the world around him.
